Oriental food (including Thai food) differs significantly from Western food, with the differences ranging from the ingredients and spices used to the method of preparation and the way the dishes are served. Where the preparation of Oriental food is concerned, this involves more time and effort than Western food. However, the actually cooking time involved is much less. Unlike Western food, Oriental food does not involve the serving of an appetiser and one main dish. A minimum of three to four “main” dishes (including one soup or curry) are served simultaenously for a family dinner. These dishes are then eaten with plain boiled rice. You may find however, that some of these dishes can be successfully used a one dish meal or as the main course in a western style dinner. Of the Oriental food listed in this website, the Chinese and Japanese dishes are relatively bland and conform more to Western tastes. Thai food however, is spicier, but it is possible to adjust the quantity of spices used to give you the desired taste. Most of the ingredients used in the recipes for Oriental food are to be found in Chinese or Oriental supermarkets in major cities in the world. It is possible however, to substitute some ingredients for others. The attached glossary gives details of these ingredients as well as possible substitutes if these ingredients are unavailable.
